Fort Whoop-Up was the nickname originated from a whisky trading post, originally Fort Hamilton, near what is now Lethbridge. Owing to the lack of a police force in the region at that time, many whisky traders had settled in the area and taken a good profit to charging unusually high prices for their goods even if the sale of whisky was outlawed.  Fort Whoop-Up is also the name of a replica site and interpretive centre built in Indian Battle Park.
